Certus IT supports major Welsh Cancer Charity...

Welsh cancer charity Tenovus is now able to help more patients than ever after investing in a £10,000 satellite for its Mobile Cancer Support Unit.

The satellite provides full internal capabilities in all areas, which, in addition to support from South Wales IT Consultancy Certus IT, improves the efficiency and reliability of the UK's first holistic Mobile Cancer Support Unit.

Staffed by Tenovus and four chemotherapy nurses from Velindre Hospital in Cardiff, the Mobile Unit delivers chemotherapy away from the hospital, in a local community setting, cutting patients’ journey times by delivering cancer treatment and support closer to their homes. The Unit also has a team that provides emotional and practical support, including advice on money matters, to patients and their families.

Allowing internet access via the Mobile Unit means that nurses have every patient’s details at their fingertips, without having to travel with heavy hard copies. The internet access also enables nurses to find information quickly and easily, reducing waiting times for patients and increasing the number of people that can be seen.

TenovusThe new satellite will also create a number of innovative opportunities and the team at Tenovus are extremely optimistic about conducting telemedicine on the Unit in the future.  In theory, this could allow patients in rural areas to access cancer services that are currently unavailable to them in their locality.

Jane Bridgeman, Tenovus’ Senior Development Nurse on the Mobile Cancer Support Unit, said: “Since its launch in 2009, we have given cancer treatment to more than 800 people and support and advice to more than 4,000 people. Our new full-internet access is the final piece in the jigsaw for us. This new technology will help us increase the efficiency and usage of the Unit, allowing us to help even more patients and their families away from hospital.”

In addition to maintaining the internet access, Certus IT will be providing its back-up and disaster recovery service to ensure that any downtime is kept to a minimum and keep patients from missing out on the care they need.

Jason Fitzgerald, sales and marketing director at Certus IT said: “Tenovus is an extremely worthwhile cause helping thousands of people every year. We have worked closely with the charity for seven years by providing complete IT support, including the maintenance of its communications network and a full IT refresh. We have also donated laptops, which we installed in the unit for the nurses to work on.

“It is a pleasure for us to be able to provide such important support, making sure that the charity is able to help as many people as possible.”
