Next Generation Data Limited has formed a new partnership with IT consultancy Certus IT designed to bring next generation technology to businesses.

As part of the partnership, Certus IT – who are headquartered in Newport, will launch a server storage facility, Certus Data Centre, in conjunction with Next Generation Data Limited’s NGD Europe, which provides high-security server housing worldwide.

Certus Data Centre is part of NGD’s existing 750,000 sq ft facility, NGD Europe, near Newport, and provides secure server storage for companies looking to adopt private cloud infrastructure, reducing the costs associated with housing more traditional server infrastructures in their own offices.

The announcement comes just a few days after NGD Europe announced the completion of a new self-contained 140,000 sq ft data floor area at the data centre.

A start-up Health, Safety and Environmental Training company based near Cardiff has invested in £40,000 worth of IT infrastructure.

Astutis provides accredited training and consultancy to businesses across the UK with its programme of courses which started in May 2011.

Three of the directors have a combined experience of 50 years in delivering health, safety and environmental training with locally based CHSS (Corporate Health and Safety Solutions).

Newport-based Certus IT has provided IT systems, including two servers, new computers and a full communications network for Astutis’ new office space totaling 2,000 sq ft at Charnwood Court, Nantgarw.

In addition, the IT consultancy will supply Astutis with a three-year support and back-up and disaster recovery service.

A Welsh IT consultancy is celebrating 10 years in business, and is ‘busier than ever’ despite the economic downturn.

The company, Certus IT, was founded by Managing Director Lynne Fodor and Business Development Director Paul Brown in 2001 with just four employees. Since then, it has diversified into a £2.5m business, employing 30 staff members and serving approximately 200 customers across Europe and the UK.

From its current home in Celtic Springs, Newport, Certus IT now specialises in IT consultancy, infrastructure design and implementation, information back-up and disaster recovery, providing services to clients such as Premier Global, Wilmott Dixon and Freshwater.  

Ms Fodor and Mr Brown began the company from £150,000 venture capital after working together for 5 years at software giant, Sega. Speaking of their decision to launch the business, Ms Fodor said: “we knew we had an opportunity to deliver high quality, cost effective and efficient IT systems that were affordable to the SME sector”.

In its first year, the company turned over £350,000, which more than doubled to £800,000 by the end of its second year. This success was due to a number of large contract wins, including its first major client, 118 118 – the directory enquiries company.

Other large projects such as the Millennium Stadium and Woodhead Connectivity - which was worth £200,000, have meant that the company’s turnover has continued to grow over the years to more than £2m – where it stands today.

Neath-Port Talbot based building services and property maintenance company Contract Services has upgraded its IT system...

IT specialist Certus IT, which is situated at Celtic Springs near Cardiff, has provided Contract Services with a new IT infrastructure on a three-year support agreement in a deal worth £50,000.

The new system also provides cutting edge back-up of key business data and systems, which are protected by a disaster recovery solution.

Contract Services work closely with local authorities, housing associations and other large organisations across south Wales.  It is an established name within its sector and is committed to providing excellent customer service and client support.

With the construction sector being depressed over recent years, Contract Services has identified opportunities for growth and is making investments that will give the company a solid platform to capitalise on these opportunities.

The company previously had an ad hoc IT support arrangement in place from its previous provider, but the company had grown beyond the level of support available and needed to identify a partner that was able to support the growing needs of the business.

Certus IT ensure the WRU are flying high in the Cloud...

Certus IT, the WRU’s IT provider, has supplied a new virtualised infrastructure and provides vital back-up to the internal team at the Welsh Rugby Union.

Thanks to the new platform – Microsoft’s Hyper-V – the Welsh Rugby Union can monitor systems and provide ad-hoc support remotely. “We no longer have to pay for engineers on site,” Mr Phillips says.

System availability and business continuity are a given, he adds. The WRU can back up its IT systems between the two sites every night, exploiting the link between the virtualised infrastructure and the dedicated broadband.

The virtualised environment also ticks the WRU’s green box, Mr Phillips notes. “We’re saving 70% of power usage in the server room after slimming down our hardware.”

The next stage is to move the Millennium Stadium’s ticketing systems into the private cloud environment, giving them additional resilience and allowing external access.

“I’ve been highly impressed with our virtualised IT environment,” Mr Phillips concludes. “It’s yet another example of how we’re moving with the times.”

Over the last nine months Certus IT has been working with leading south Wales based chartered surveyors, Cooke & Arkwright, to upgrade their computer network.

The IT managed support services deal has included a major technology refresh at both of Cooke & Arkwright’s offices in Cardiff and Bridgend, not only providing improved performance and the flexibility needed for future growth but also reducing running costs through virtualising its servers. 

Virtualisation is the process by which separate servers are consolidated into a virtual environment that can be hosted on a smaller number of physical host machines, saving space and costs. 


The set-up provides almost immediate system recovery so that, if there is a server failure, it can be up and running again in a matter of minutes instead of the three to five days it typically takes, helping to overcome problems with downtime that can have a direct impact on the bottom line.
 

Significant savings can also be made in terms of the reduced space, power and air conditioning costs associated with housing, powering and cooling more traditional server infrastructures.
